Six days before the National Day of Celebration, David Burnham sat in his Capitol Hill townhouse, channel-surfing as he sipped a glass of white wine. It was Sunday evening, a time he had long ago learned was high tide for reading the psyche of the nation. He usually watched TV for two or three hours, alternating between reruns of the Sunday morning talk shows and the underbelly of cable, accumulating juicy tidbits to pass on to the Speaker in the morning.

“With God’s help, our nation has triumphed over the legions of darkness,” crooned the Reverend Sanford J. Bayer in his weekly television sermon, broadcast on a Christian cable station. “On May first, the good and God-fearing people of America were attacked by the forces of evil. God called upon us to respond, and with his help our brave troops performed valiantly. Now we must muster our strength, cleanse our souls, and prepare for the battle ahead.”

We finally get a faggot in the White House, he thought grimly, and it turns out he’s a Holy Roller. Burnham figured the administration hated gays almost as much as terrorists, and he found it ironic and amusing that they had chosen Bayer as their spiritual spokesman. As he watched the minister with his purple robe and carefully styled, orange-tinted hair, he marveled at how badly political calculation could come back to bite people on the ass. They’ll live to regret this, and it won’t take long. This guy is out of his league—he was hired to encourage people to give more canned goods to the poor, and now he’s battling the Antichrist.

“Our resolve must be firm,” said Reverend Bayer, “just as our support for our men and women in uniform must be steadfast. The triumphant campaign we have just concluded in Sumeristan will likely turn out to be the first of many. For the enemy we battle today in this new crusade against the forces of evil in the world is far more formidable than the one faced by our Christian brothers centuries ago, as they journeyed forth to the Holy Land to conquer the infidels. Each and every one of us must be alert to the presence of traitors in our midst, and do our part to identify the enemies amongst us.”

We’re all infidels now, you asshole. He was amazed that Cane had allowed his spokesmen to refer to the military campaign as a crusade, given the alarm and anger that image must raise in the Muslim world. It had to be Hornsby’s doing: the old CIA tactic of throwing the enemy off-balance before the battle even began. Let the holy wars begin, and may the non-Christians shiver at the sight of us.

“Remember that the terrorists who attacked us on May Day only succeeded because they had the support of a fifth column of Muslim extremists living among us. Masquerading as ordinary Americans, these agents took their orders from Salman al-Akbar and Husam al-Din. While recognizing that there are many law-abiding Muslims living in America, we must do our civic duty and stay alert for suspicious behavior in our communities.
